Anees Bazmee on the resurfacing of his two decades old film 'Naam': Hope they are not trying to pass it off as a new product, aaj ka audience bahot hoshiyar hai

Anees Bazmee is currently basking in the glory of the success of 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3'. But in this festive period, one of his old project, titled 'Naam' has found a new way, which was apparently put on hold since many years now. The decision to resurrect a film that was made two decades ago, polish it up, and release it in 2024 seems questionable and, to many, a disservice to everyone involved in its making. The film, featuring Ajay Devgan, Bhoomika Chawla, and Sameera Reddy, was originally completed in 2004. Bazmee, however, did not associate the timing of its release as peculiar.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he said, "What can I do if the producers have decided to release an old project I had forgotten? I made this film in 2004 with Ajay Devgan, Bhoomika Chawla and Sameera Reddy. This is 2024 and everyone has moved on. So it’s not just a disservice to me but to all concerned."

On asked about contacting Ajay Devgn to which he said “No I haven’t. I don’t see the need. Ajay too must have forgotten about it until now when the producers suddenly brought it out of the cans… It’s okay. If it helps them to make even a bit of money, then I am okay with it. I only hope they are not trying to pass it off as a new product. Aaj ka audience bahot hoshiyar hai. They cannot be taken for granted."

While Bazmee is being magnanimous on the decision, one can sense the worry beneath. The potential release of a film that somehow illustrates a stage of filmmaking sensibilities two decades back may mar the reputation of those involved. For one, it's reminder of how the industry often tries to cash in on the current success of a filmmaker by bringing up some of his old, forgotten projects.

For Bazmee, however, this release is a minor hitch in an otherwise triumphant career. He is keen on his present work and seems to have resigned himself to the producers' order. That notwithstanding, he would want the viewer to approach 'Naam' with an understanding of its context and the era in which it was shot.
