Throwback: Here’s WHY Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant chose Jamnagar for their first pre-wedding festivities

Anant Ambani and his fiancée, Radhika Merchant, chose Jamnagar, Gujarat, as the venue for their initial pre-wedding festivities earlier this year. This decision is steeped in personal significance and a deep sense of heritage, reflecting both their family roots and their commitment to celebrating their union within India.

Jamnagar holds a special place in the hearts of the Ambani family. Anant Ambani explained that this city is his grandmother's birthplace (janmabhoomi) and the foundation of his grandfather Dhirubhai Ambani and his father Mukesh Ambani's business endeavors (karmabhoomi). This dual significance of Jamnagar as both a birthplace and a place of work for his family adds a profound layer of meaning to their choice.

"I have grown up here, and it's my good fortune that we could plan the celebration here. This is my dadi's janm bhoomi and my dada and papa's karm bhoomi. It's a matter of pride and happiness when our PM mentioned that one should get married in India. And this is my home. My father often says that this is my dada's sasural (in-laws' house), and hence we are celebrating here. I also believe I am from Jamnagar, yahin ka nagarik hun," Anant Ambani shared during an interview with India Today.

Anant Ambani was also influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Wed in India' initiative, which encourages couples to celebrate their weddings within the country rather than opting for international destinations. In a Mann ki Baat address in November, PM Modi expressed concern over the trend of holding weddings abroad and emphasized the importance of celebrating such significant events in India.

For Radhika Merchant, Jamnagar represents more than just a backdrop for their festivities. It is a place where they have spent considerable time, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. "Choosing Jamnagar was our way of honoring our roots and the family’s legacy," Radhika told Vogue. "It’s the place where Anant works and where we spend much of our time. It is also where Anant’s grandmother, Kokilaben, was born and truly where our heart is," she added.

By hosting their pre-wedding celebrations in Jamnagar, Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant made a powerful statement about the importance of heritage, tradition, and family. Their choice of venue is a tribute to their roots and an acknowledgment of the rich history that has shaped their lives.
