Amyra Dastur: I know I don’t have the connections that a lot of people have in Bollywood
“I have never been someone who’s got anything that easily. If something came very easily to me, then I would rather be surprised,” says Amyra Dastur, who’s paved her way into Bollywood and has been exploring Punjabi cinema of late.
In her career spanning 10 years, the actress also got to explore south cinema and has been a part of an international project. Hailing from South Mumbai, and from a non-film family where her father is a doctor, the actress had to go through all the hardships to make her way into showbiz. Even after so many years, Amyra says that the struggles are constant.
She elaborates saying, “I will be amazed if I don’t have to go through the tough process of audition to get that role. I know my position in this industry. I know I don’t have the connections that a lot of people have here. If I wanted to be a doctor, my father (who’s from the medical fraternity) could have helped me. I chose to get into a field where I don’t know anyone. I will have to build those relationships on my own. So, long story short, I have got work based on the hard work and so that makes me value it more.”
Talking about some of her great works, Amyra adds, “In recent times, I felt blessed to have worked in a film like Rajma Chawal where my character was really strong and where I got an opportunity to work with Rishi Kapoor. Going ahead I would love to play the protagonist in a woman centric film too. But I also feel I have to still earn a little more standing with the audience to get that. Because I don’t want to do a big, female-centric film at this point in my career where I feel I can’t bring in the kind of audience that is required to really pump up the film. I need to do two-three more films to get to that level where I can stand on my own.”
