Imtiaz Ali’s latest film, named after the late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, has relightened interest in the singer's life. Known for his distinctive musical style, Chamkila's rough personal life continues to fascinate audiences, even 36 years after his untimely death.
Talking to BBC Hindi, Jaswant Kaur, elder sister of Amarjot, talked about the complexities of their relationship with Chamkila. She revealed that there were no plans for Amarjot’s marriage. Chamkila didn’t tell them that he was already married. He told them that he was unmarried. Their father had two conditions – that the boy should be a singer and unmarried. They finally tied the knot. After the birth of Amarjot and Chamkila’s son, they got to know about his first marriage.
Jaswant further added that it has been 36 years but they still haven’t gotten any justice, no file was opened. They demand that the perpetrators should be arrested and punished. They have lost their family members so they should be punished.
Chamkila was assassinated in 1988 along with Amarjot. However, the case was never solved and no arrests were made.
In the film, 'Amar Singh Chamkila', Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra take on the roles of the murdered singers.
