Accusations of domestic violence, drug abuse and rumours of fight with Shah Rukh Khan: Shocking controversies of Yo Yo Honey Singh

On August 3, rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh made headlines after his wife Shalini Talwar filed a case of domestic violence against him. She filed the case under the 'Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act' in Delhi's Tis Hazari Court. Earlier in the past, he has been at the center of controversies. From rumours of getting slapped by Shah Rukh Khan to getting stuck with an FIR over vulgar lyrics of a song, here’s looking at his controversies to date:

Yo Yo Honey Singh and Shalini Talwar tied the knot in January 2011 after secretly dating for almost two decades. In her application, she has alleged that she has been subjected to several incidents of physical, verbal, and mental abuse. She has said that her husband used to get payment in cash but she was not made privy to it. She also said that Honey Singh would earn Rs 4 crore a month from songs, performances and royalties and it is around that time he got addicted to alcohol, drugs, and anabolic drugs. He got arrogant and abusive and would have sex with multiple women. When she found out about his affair with a Punjabi actress, he promised to break up with her with a promise to stay loyal to her. Shalini has reportedly asked Rs. 10 crore compensation from Honey Singh, stating that she felt like a farm animal being subjected to cruelty.

Reports say that Badshah and Honey Singh had a physical fight at a party in Delhi. Soon after, during a press conference, Honey was promoting his film ‘Zorawar’, one of the reporters asked if he thinks that Badshah has taken over the music industry in his absence, to which Honey had replied, “Have you driven a Rolls -Royce? There is a difference between a Rolls-Royce and a Nano.”

Rumours of Shah Rukh Khan slapping Honey Singh were rife after the release of ‘Chennai Express’. The rapper had worked on the song ‘Lungi Dance’. Reports suggested that he was slapped by SRK for misbehaving on one of their tours after getting drunk. He then left the tour which strengthened the rumours. But Shalini had backed her husband back then. During an interview with an entertainment portal, she had said that all those were imaginary stories. She added that Honey really respects Shah Rukh and the superstar too treats him like a younger brother. She had said Honey fell during the rehearsal as he was on heavy medication and so he came back from the tour.

Honey Singh’s hit song ‘Makhna’ faced legal trouble due to its lyrics. In 2019, Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati had written to the Director-General of Police to register a criminal case against the singer for using lyrics like "Mein hoon womanizer”. In 2013, he was involved in a controversy over the lyrics of his song ‘Main hoon balatkari’.
