Aamir Khan surprised everyone when he announced his separation from wife Kiran Rao on July 3. The couple ended their relationship of 15 years and stated that they will continue to co-parent their son Azad Rao Khan. Here’s taking a look at six other times Aamir Khan hit headlines.

In a lengthy statement, Aamir and Kiran admitted that they had been living separately since some time and had finally decided to part ways amicably. Revealing their plans to begin a ‘new chapter’, Aamir and Kiran shared, “We remain devoted parents to our son Azad, who we will nurture and raise together. We will also continue to work as collaborators on films, Paani Foundation, and other projects that we feel passionate about. A big thank you to our families and friends for their constant support and understanding about this evolution in our relationship, and without whom we would not have been so secure in taking this leap. We request our well wishers for good wishes and blessings, and hope that - like us - you will see this divorce not as an end, but as the start of a new journey”.

In August 2020, pictures of Aamir’s meeting with the First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdogan, went viral on the internet. The actor was there to shoot for his film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ but trolls soon started criticising the actor. Aamir Khan was slammed by netizens who allegedly tagged his outing as a meeting with “enemies of INDIA”.

Fatima Sana Shaikh marked her Bollywood debut with the Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Dangal’, and soon after she was signed up for ‘Thugs of Hindostan' which was headlined by the actor. This led to speculations that Aamir was romancing Fatima and these talks reportedly upset Kiran Rao. Addressing the rumours, Fatima had told Filmfare in an interview, “It disturbs me because I don’t want people to assume wrong things. But I’ve learnt to ignore it. Yet, there are some days when I do get affected”.

Aamir Khan found himself in the midst of a massive controversy when he joined the debate about rising ‘intolerance’ in the country and stated that his wife Kiran Rao had asked if they should move out of the country as she feared for the safety of their child. An FIR was also lodged against Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao and he faced a lot of criticism over it.

Nearly two decades ago, Aamir had posted on his blog that he was sitting under a tree and playing his favourite board game while ‘Shahrukh’ is licking his feet as he feeds him biscuits every now and then. Fans of SRK were irked with this comment wherein Aamir had stated that his dog’s name was similar to that of King Khan. Aamir had later clarified that Shah Rukh was the name of his bungalow caretaker’s dog and that he was keen to invite SRK to his Panchgani house.

In 2006, Aamir had joined activist Medha Patkar for the Narmada Bachao Andolan, protesting against Gujarat goverment's decision to raise the height of the Narmada dam. He had expressed concern for the rehabilitation of the farmers and refused to apologise for his comments. Following his statements, Aamir Khan-starrer 'Rang De Basanti' was withdrawn from screens in Gujarat and 'Fanaa' was also not released in theatres there.
