Aamir Khan shares update on dream project 'Mahabharat', says it's a huge responsibility: 'I want to make sure I get it right'
Aamir Khan has often spoken about his long-cherished ambition to adapt the 'Mahabharat' for the screen, and in a recent interaction, the actor reiterated why he has been cautious about moving ahead with the project. Aamir has called 'Mahabharat' his dream project and in earlier interviews, the actor has also admitted that his favourite character from it is Lord Krishna. He had shared an update last year that he would start work on it by the end of the year. However, in a recent interview, the 'Dangal' star admitted that he cannot afford to get it wrong. He added that the 'epic saga' carries immense emotional and cultural weight for Indians, which is why he wants to proceed only when he feels fully prepared.
Aamir said during an interview with News18, “That’s my dream, let’s see if it becomes a reality one day. I really would love to have the opportunity to do that, but it is a big responsibility. Indians are so strongly connected, it is in our blood. I don’t think there is any Indian who hasn’t read the Bhagwat Gita or, at the very least, heard it from their grandmother. Making a film, which is so fundamental for all Indians, is also a big responsibility. I often say this, ‘You can let Mahabharata down, Mahabharata will never let you down.’ You do a bad job, you’ll let it down. I want to make sure that if I ever make this film, I make it in such a way that all Indians feel really proud.”
Describing the epic as the ultimate template for fantasy storytelling, Aamir went on to compare it with popular Hollywood spectacles. “Over the years, we have seen a lot of Hollywood films which are big entertainers, Lord of the Rings or Avatar. The world has seen it all. But this (Mahabharata) is the mother of it all. So I think Indians will be really proud if it comes out well. I am taking my time because I want to make sure I get it right,” he said.
This is not the first occasion on which Aamir has opened up about the project. Earlier, during a conversation with Raj Shamani, he hinted that 'Mahabharat' could potentially be his final film. He had said, “Maybe after doing this, I will feel that I have nothing left to do. I cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that.”
On work front, Aamir was last seen as an actor in 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. His production 'Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos', featuring Vir Das in the lead, is currently playing in cinemas. His next film as a producer, Junaid Khan, Sai Pallavi starrer 'Ek Din'. He also has Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta starrer 'Lahore 1947' lined up this year.
