Muzaffar Ali is a name that commands instant respect. After all, who can forget a classic like Umrao Jaan, which remains this passionate filmmaker’s finest film till date? Ali was in Ahmedabad recently for showcasing his movie
Gaman at a film festival held at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. Asked about his films always being characterized by strong women characters, Ali said, “I feel women tell a story better and are more sensitive to what happens in the society.
They are very different to men when it comes to the way of thinking. So, to mirror the culture of a particular era, strong women characters are an absolute must.”
Asked about the obsession with 100 crore films in today’s Bollywood, he quips, “Why just films? I think it’s a comment on the obsession with the
crorepati concept in today’s world. You can see it in every other aspect of life too! Having said that, it’s equally true that there is a section of the audience who likes these
100 crore club films, else how do you explain the box-office success? Certain filmmakers are only catering to this class, which is understandable. At the end of the day, filmmakers have to earn money too!”
