A joyful ride for Road, Movie

The characters of Dev Benegal’s film discovered love, life, happiness on their truck-drive through Rajasthan
A joyful ride for Road, Movie
Shooting in the heat of the scorching sun in Rajasthan for Indian Films’ Road, Movie wasn’t a lark but it certainly provided for some moments of adventure for the cast of the film.
Recalls Tannishtha Chatterjee, “There were times when the truck would just get stuck in the sand and we had to shoot with planks kept under the wheels. Once, the truck got stuck and from nowhere, a number of gypsies and others turned up with water for us.

We shot a similar sequence for the film too.”
It was with the intention of discovering the Indian landscape, that director Dev Benegal came up with the idea of the film. “I love the idea of escape, jumping into a car and travelling for miles and miles,” he says. Road, Movie that releases tomorrow, is about the journey that Abhay Deol’s character undertakes during which he comes across various people who contribute to his life. “Ultimately, the film is about discovering happiness and laughter,” he says. Abhay agrees, “Every film is a journey where the character starts somewhere either mentally or physically, and reaches somewhere else by the end. In this film, my character matures by the end to discover love, life and happiness.”
Satish Kaushik, for whom, the ‘film was a joyful ride’, says that journeys give a sense of excitement and fulfilment. “This film does the same to Abhay’s character,” he adds. And although there are four main characters in the film, it’s the fifth character that was indispensable for the making. “The truck is the fifth character in the film, without which there would have been no journey,” Dev says. But for Tannishtha, the truck remains special for other reasons. “There were no shadows in the desert so the only respite from the sun was provided by the truck!” she laughs.
