Second week and third film in 2010 continues to be a non-performer. Shahid Kapoors Chance Pe Dance opened to a poor response at the box-office continuing the fate of Pyaar Impossible and Dulha Mil Gaya. A vibrant Shahid Kapoor could not overpower the outdated plotline and clichd storytelling of the film. The business of the film only proves that scripts work over stars in Bollywood anytime.
The production banner UTV Motion Pictures had a spate of flops in 2009 including films like Delhi-6, Dhoondte Reh Jaoge, Agyaat, Aagey Se Right, Whats Your Raashee and Kurbaan and entered 2010 with an equally dull note. Reportedly the film went over-budget because of the delay in its making and the intermittent change of the female lead from Jiah Khan to Genelia DSouza. So it becomes even more difficult for the banner to recover its cost. These shoddy films are only acting as an icing on the cake for the business of 3 Idiots which is winning repeat audience like no Hindi film might have seen in recent times. 3 Idiots has won blockbuster status and trade circles are calling it the new Sholay. The other film to emerge victorious is interestingly the Hollywood flick Avatar which is doing better than the business of any good Hindi hit. Not only has Avatar won 2 awards at the Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture (Drama) & Best Director, it has crossed Rs 95 crores to become the Biggest ever Hollywood film in India. Avatar beat the box-office collection of the other Hollywood film 2012 to win the No.1 position in India. And the film is still going strong across all centers in the country, leaving behind several Bollywood hits of the year and also featuring among the Top 10 grossers ever in India. Commenting on the films stupendous performance, Mr. Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios India said, It is a proud moment for Fox Star, as Avatar receives 2 important honours at the Golden Globes and also becomes the No.1 Hollywood film in India. We believe that Avatar could close as the 2nd biggest film for 2009 after 3 Idiots. Becoming the fastest film to reach the $1 billion mark, Avatar is currently at USD 1.6 billion and is now competing with Camerons own 1997 blockbuster Titanic (USD 1.8 billion) for the worldwide No1 spot. The coming week sees the release of the first Khan release of 2010 Veer, written and acted by Salman Khan. Its to be seen whether Salman is able to sustain the success of his last action flick Wanted. Veer directed by Anil Sharma (who gave the biggest Bollywood blockbuster of all times Gadar) promises a lot of action and drama.
