Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 which has set the box office on fire in India as it became the second biggest hit of 2025 and 9th biggest hit of Indian cinema but across the globe the film hasn’t found as much success. But the film has been resilient in its performance especially in the North American market which has traditionally been dominated by Hindi and Telugu releases.
But Kantara series has a habit of setting new benchmarks not only for itself but for Kannada industry as well, it was the first Kannada film to cross the USD 1 million mark in North American circuit which laid the foundation for Yash’s KGF 2.And it is now heading towards USD 5 million mark- it’s current total collection in North America stands at USD 4.66 million( Rs 40.92 crore).The only real competition Kantara 2 is currently facing is Ayushmann Khurrana- Rashmika Mandanna’s Thamma which earned USD 82,000 on Thursday while Rishab’s directorial venture earned just USD 8,000. But it has already become the 2nd highest grossing Kannada film in the circuit , second only to yash’s KGF 2 which had minted USD 7.49 million. Though Kantara 2 has been showing consistency at the box office, the distributors are facing a lot of at least USD 1-2 million at the film’s breakeven and had been pegged at USD 7.5 million as per multiple reports. Besides Thamma- with the release of Baahubali- The Epic, the re-cut version of both films being put into one will also make the ride difficult for Kantara 2. The makers of Kantara 2 had already announced Kantara 3 in the climax of the second part but it is going to be a couple of years before Rishab comes back to the series.
