Rishab Shetty’s ‘Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1’ beats Shraddha Kapoor’s ‘Stree 2’ to become 8th biggest hit of Indian Cinema

Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 continues to break records as it is all set for its OTT premiere tomorrow. On its 28th day of its release the film added Rs 2.50 crore to its kitty taking the overall collection of the film to Rs 599.15 crore. And with that it has now become the 8th biggest hit of Indian Cinema displacing Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer Stree 2, directed by Amar Kaushik which had minted Rs 597.99 crore.

Back in 2022 when Rishab Shetty and his team would have set out to make Kantara 1, no one would have imagined the kind of success it would have had. The success of part 1 was so huge that it not only minted more than Rs 309 crore at the box office but also generated enough buzz for the sequel. And since the day of its release, the second instalment has been breaking one record after another. It has now become the 8th biggest hit of Indian Cinema with only 7 films ahead of it.

Sukumar and Allu Arjun’s Pushpa: The Rule: Rs 1234.1 crore

SS Rajamouli, Prabhas and rana Dagubbati’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion : Rs 1030.42 crore

Prashanth Neel and Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 – Rs 859.7 crore

SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan and Jr NTR’s RRR – Rs 782.2 crore

Nag Ashwin, Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD – Rs 646.31 crore

Atlee and Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan – Rs 640.25 crore

Laxman Utekar and Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava – Rs 601.54 crore

Kantara 2 in its first week minted Rs 337.4 crore, in second week the film minted Rs 147.85 crore. In the third week the collection hit Rs 78.85 crore and in six days of 4th week it has added another Rs 35.05 crore to its collection. It has now set its eyes on becoming the biggest hit of the year, the position which is held by Vicky Kaushal and Laxman Utekar’s Chhaava with Rs 601.54 collection. And it now needs less than Rs 2.50 crore to gain the top spot, which in all probability it should cross by the end of the day.

The overall collection of the film could have crossed Rs 650 crore had the makers not decided to drop the film on OTT in the fourth week itself. Dulquer Salmaan’s Lokah: Chapter 1- Chandra which had a lifetime collection of over Rs 156 crore was able to hold off its OTT debut for 7 weeks, despite the norm for films for Southern Indian being 4 weeks. And now both the film are hitting different OTT platforms tomorrow.
