Munjya Box Office: Abhay Verma and Sharvari starrer crosses Rs 100 crore mark

Abhay Verma, Sharvari and Mona Singh starrer Munjya, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, has finally crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in its fifth week. The film has become the third Hindi film of the year after Hrithik Roshan’s FIghter and Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan to cross the magical figure.


In an exclusive interview with ETimes, director Aditya Sarpotdar shared that the film was actually scheduled for a later release date, but finally hit theatres on 7th June. He said, “ The film purely comes from the world of ET, it comes from the world of Stranger Things and Harry Potter. I did believe that genre lends itself to families and kids coming and watching the film. Purely because Munja also was pitched as a character that was not only horror, but also fun. And I thought that if we kind of hit that audience at the right time they are all coming back home from their holidays, they all are waiting for their schools to start and they have nothing to look out for. Also the World Cup was going to start and the IPL was over and so were the elections. And word of mouth picked up the film.”

The film’s run at the box office has been like a dream with Rs 35 crore in first week to Rs 32.65 in the second, and Rs 22.95 crore in the third and in fourth, it earned Rs 6.1 crore and Rs 3.01 crore in the fourth week, thus completing its century on the last day of the fifth week. The film’s collection faced a massive competition in the fifth week, courtesy Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD. The sci-fi mythology film has crossed more than Rs 500 crore in just 15 days.

Munjya is part of Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy universe along with Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Stree, who’s second installment in releasing on 15th August weekend, and Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon’s Bhediya. One can expect characters from all three films to have a crossover soon. In fact after werewolves and ghosts now even vampires are being added to the horror universe as Aditya Sarpotdar is kickstarting his next film The Vampires of Vijay Nagar with Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna.
