Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency witnesses over 100 % jump on Saturday

Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated political drama, Emergency, has crossed the Rs 15 crore mark at the box office, showcasing steady growth in its second weekend. The film, based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her controversial decision to impose the Emergency in 1975, continues to find a niche audience despite facing stiff competition from other releases.

Emergency earned Rs 14.3 crore in its first week, with modest yet consistent collections driven by Kangana's powerful performance and the film's compelling subject matter.

The second Friday saw the film collecting Rs 40 lakh, a relatively subdued figure, but the collections witnessed a significant boost on the second Saturday, jumping to Rs 85 lakh. This more than 100% spike, highlights growing word-of-mouth appreciation, and renewed interest in the film. Its total now stands at Rs 15.55 crore.

Critics have lauded Kangana’s portrayal of Indira Gandhi, highlighting her commanding screen presence and dedication to the role, which also extends to her duties as director. The film delves into the complexities of Gandhi’s political decisions during the Emergency, a period marked by curtailed civil liberties and widespread political unrest.

Kangana is supported in the film with the stellar cast of Anupam Kher, late Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, along with Milind Soman and Mahima Chaudhary. The actor-director has to go through a lot of struggle to get the film released, from first mortgaging her property to make the film, to finally selling it, to having a run-in with the Censor board, to the film being banned in Punjab. Now, Kangana is also reportedly in talks with filmmakers for Queen 2 and Tanu Weds Manu 3- two of her most successful films.
