JTHJ overtakes SOS by decent margin
Shah Rukh Khan's 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' collects Rs 80 crores while Ajay Devgn's 'Son of Sardaar' collects Rs 66 crores in its opening weekend. However the latter had 500 less screens. Diwali is a season where the biggest films can clash yet coexist at the box-office. Thereby Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar, both films were received quite favourably and did decent business, despite being pitted against each other. However if we have to decide the winner amongst the two - Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the clear winner with a decent margin.Yash Chopra's last directorial venture with its star power and strong romance drama enjoyed a brilliant run at the box-office and the extended opening weekend collection for the film is round Rs 80 crores (day-wise breakup: Tue - 15.23 Cr, Wed - 19.54 Cr, Thu - 14.45 Cr, Fri - 11.17 Cr, Sat - 10.38 Cr, Sun - 9.96 Cr). Even in the overseas market (where SRK rules supreme) the film collected $ 3.5 Million (Rs 19.3 Cr) in its first 3 days and is continuing to mint money. On the other hand, Son of Sardaar, after opening with a mind boggling Rs 10.72 Crores (Net box office collections) on the very first day (despite having 500 theaters lesser than Jab Tak Hai Jaan), continued reigning the box offices across India post Diwali. The extended opening weekend collection is a strong Rs 66.02 crores (day-wise breakup: Tue - 10.72 cr, Wed - 16.21 Cr, Thu - 12.22 Cr, Fri - 10.12 Cr, Sat - 8.50 Cr, Sun - 8.25 Cr).
The business of both the films were affected to a huge extent, especially over the prospective period of weekend, due to Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray's demise which resulted in closing down of several cinema-halls in and around Mumbai, a very big business center for both films. Trade experts estimate that the loss would be easily in the range of Rs 16-18 crores for both films individually. However since there are no big releases this week, both films get another week at the box-office and if the business continues to be consistent, one can expect both films to reach the Rs 100 crore mark.Top Hindi Films this WeekFilm: Jab Tak Hain JaanPosition: 1Director: Yash ChopraCast: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka SharmaUpside: Good performances by lead cast, technically brilliant, Yash Chopra brand full-blooming romance, decent musicDownside: Too long and often slowRunning Week: 1Trade Comments: Yash Chopra's last directorial venture with its star power and strong romance drama enjoyed a brilliant run at the box-office and the extended opening weekend collection for the film is round Rs 80 crores (day-wise breakup: Tue - 15.23 Cr, Wed - 19.54 Cr, Thu - 14.45 Cr, Fri - 11.17 Cr, Sat - 10.38 Cr, Sun - 9.96 Cr).
