Low costs bail out Agyaat and Teree Sang. Shahid Kapoors Kaminey predicted to get one of the biggest openings of the year.
After two hits Sarkar Raj and Phoonk, Ram Gopal Varma goes back to his Aag days with Agyaat. Agyaat has received as much ridicule as Aag for its deceitful direction. Though the opening was pretty decent for its hype, collections soon went down with negative reviews and bad word of mouth. While experimental projects click more at multiplexes, Agyaat worked more at single screens since it was less of an experiment and more of masala.
Nevertheless, it was widely promoted in the media that Agyaat had recovered its investment even before its release. Produced at a cost-efficient budget of only Rs 5 crores, Agyaat was also released in dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions for a wider reach. Roping in south actor Nitin Reddy helped production house UTV pre-sell the Tamil and Telugu rights for a handsome sum and recover the production cost. So the earnings from the Hindi version will simply add to the profits of the film. That way Agyaat is a profit making proposition. Basically the film seems to be designed as a money-making scheme without much focus towards entertainment.
The second release Teree Sang was promoted as a social film on the issue of teenage pregnancy. However it was as good as a commercial potboiler with a small moral message appended at the end. Surprisingly the film received a decent audience which was a mix of youth as well as family. The business is slightly better in North India with the films Delhi setting. Though not extraordinary collections, Teree Sang might be able to breakeven for its low cost.
The third release Chal Chalein starring Mithun Chakravarthy and Shilpa Shukla expectedly had no audience.
Two big releases are slated for release this week to cash on the extended weekend holiday. While Independence Day comes on Saturday, Friday will be observed as a holiday at many places on account of Krishna Janmashtmi. Abbas Mustans first Hindi film as a producer Life Partner is directed by Rumi Jaffrey. Starring Fardeen Khan, Genelia DSouza, Tusshar Kapoor, Prachi Desai and Govinda, the film is a romantic comedy and should fetch a decent opening. But its UTVs Kaminey that is the most anticipated movie of the season. This Vishal Bharadwaj film starring Shahid Kapoor in a double role and Priyanka Chopra has been strongly promoted and has tremendous hype surrounding it. Trade circles are predicting an opening that could be in the league of the biggest of the year. There are chances that the swine-flu threat that has put the nation on red alert might make a dent in the business of this weeks releases. People are staying away from public places including malls and multiplexes. Industry men are just praying that things get back to normal for good health of one and all.
