Box Office Report: Audiences wake up to Sid over Govinda's disturbance

From the two releases of the week, Wake Up Sid has an upper hand over the other release Do Knot Disturb. Dharma Productions' Wake Up Sid starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma worked its charm on the viewers through its simple narrative. This Karan Johar production, directed by debutante Ayan Mukerji was made on a budget of Rs 15 crores. Distributed worldwide with around 700 prints by UTV Motion Pictures, the film had a gross collection of Rs 21.5 crores in its opening weekend.
"Wake Up Sid is doing extremely well. We've had an occupancy of more than 90 percent across 17 shows over the initial weekend and it is still going strong while 'Do Knot Disturb' had only a two-day run with close to 75 percent despite 16 shows," said Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida.
"We are expecting Wake Up Sid to continue a good run at least until the Diwali weekend, which has major releases like Blue, Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna and All The Best. Though we have Acid Factory on Oct 9, we are sincerely doubtful about its future in multiplexes," he added.

The other film Do Knot Disturb produced by Vashu Bhagnani, directed by David Dhawan and distributed by Big Films had a good opening thanks to the Govinda-David Dhawan-Riteish Deshmukh comedy stamp but the collections fizzled out over the weekend. David Dhawan has been serving the same slapstick stuff for years now and its time to upgrade the humour in his films.
The business trends of these two films give a clear indication that content has taken precedence over star or brand value. Also audiences are no more accepting slapsticks served on the excuse of comedies. Hope filmmakers learn lessons and adapt to the changing trends and tastes of audiences.

The coming week has a solo release in the form of Acid Factory. Produced by Sanjay Gupta and directed by Suparn Verma, Acid Factory is supposedly a remake of a 2006 Hollywood flick called Unknown. Starring Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Irrfan Khan, Dia Mirza, Dino Morea and Manoj Bajpai, the film isn't essentially hot property but could do decent business since it's the only release of the week.
The biggies have reserved themselves for the coming week of Diwali. Blue, All The Best and Main aur Mrs Khanna will explode next Friday.
