Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par becomes 5th highest-grossing film of his career
Aamir Khan has added yet another feather to his illustrious cap with Sitaare Zameen Par, which has raked in an impressive Rs 149.89 crore in just 18 days across all languages. Directed by R.S. Prasanna and also starring Genelia D'Souza, the emotional drama has now emerged as the 5th highest-grossing film of Aamir Khan’s career, surpassing the lifetime collections of big-budget films like Thugs of Hindostan and Ghajini.
Released in three languages—Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu—Sitaare Zameen Par opened to strong word-of-mouth and critical appreciation, especially for its heartwarming storytelling and performances. It witnessed a solid first weekend, earning Rs 10.7 crore on Friday, Rs 20.2 crore on Saturday, and peaking with Rs 27.25 crore on Sunday. Despite expected weekday drops, the film closed its first week with a robust Rs 88.9 crore.
The second weekend held strong, with Saturday and Sunday contributing Rs 12.6 crore and Rs 14.5 crore respectively, and a total Week 2 collection of Rs 46.5 crore. The third weekend again showed the audience's continued interest, adding another Rs 13.3 crore over Friday to Sunday. As of Day 18 (third Monday), Sitaare Zameen Par has reached Rs 148.89 crore, inching close to the Rs 150 crore milestone—a feat rarely achieved by a non-action, emotion-driven social drama in recent years.
With this, the film has comfortably overtaken Thugs of Hindostan (Rs 145.55 crore), Ghajini (Rs 114 crore), and Talaash (Rs 93.61 crore) in Aamir Khan’s career tally. It now trails behind only 3 Idiots (Rs 202.47 crore), Dhoom 3 (Rs 271.07 crore), PK (Rs 340.8 crore), and Dangal (Rs 374.43 crore)—all massive blockbusters with wide appeal and multi-week dominance.
Sitaare Zameen Par marks a significant comeback for Aamir after the underwhelming performance of Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs 61.12 crore). It has not only reinstated his box office credibility but also reaffirmed his strong connect with family audiences, thanks to the film’s emotional themes, inclusive narrative, and child-centric story.
While it may not reach the heights of films like Dangal or PK, its entry into the top five is a clear testament to the power of content-driven cinema when backed by a trusted name like Aamir Khan. With limited competition in the coming days, Sitaare Zameen Par is expected to continue its steady run and possibly close its lifetime business above Rs 160 crore.
