For the first time in history of Indian cinema, as many as 7 films will clash at the box-office in the same week.

The week gone by was too laidback in terms of its releases. Both the films Sikandar and Shadow weren��t of the ��keenly anticipated�� kinds. Big Pictures�� Sikandar was ready to release in April but got delayed because of the producer-exhibitor strike. This small film with a social-suspense setting in Kashmir was targeted more towards the multiplex audiences.But even there it didn��t fetch a strong audience with an opening not more than 10-20% occupancy.
The second release was clearly a B-grader with no cast or credible value. But the massive promotion of Shadow made it look like the next big thing. Nevertheless, the idea of accepting an obese, ugly and non-actor Nasseer Khan as the hero was out of question. Add to it the film had big fat Sonali Kulkarni in an item song, pathetic performances by entire cast and terrible direction. Other than some shady single screens, Shadow had no audience.

After a terrific first week, Kaminey slowed down in its second week. While most critics gave liberal rating to the film, the audiences did not think likewise. Kaminey has met with extreme response. People have either loved it or hated it. Kaminey is not an arty fare but the dark treatment of the film is such that it hasn��t found much acceptance with Indian audiences. While youth and the intellect sect are liking the film, most others have disliked it. The film may not hold much repeat value.

Kaminey has got around Rs 25 crore net in its first week but collections have slid down in second week.
Life Partner, on the other hand, has picked up after a slow start and is working mostly at single screens with Rs 10 crore net business in its first week.

After a lax week with two unexciting releases, the next week is a complete U-turn with as many as 7 releases. This is a record number and something like this hasn��t happened for years. More importantly these films are releasing when Ramzan and Ganesh festival are on, which is not considered a good period for film business. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, ��Even during Diwali that��s supposed to be the best season for film release we have not more that 3-4 films. So to see 7 releases in Ramzan is professional hara-kiri��
The releases of the week include
Quick Gun Murugun �� spoof comedy
Kisaan (Sohail Khan-Arbaaz Khan-Jackie Shroff) �� action drama
Love Khichdi (Randeep Hooda with 7 actresses) �� romantic comedy
Daddy Cool (Suniel Shetty-Aftab) �� comedy
Toss (Ashmit Patel-Ranvijay Singh) �� suspense thriller
Yeh Mera India �� social drama
Shubh Charitro Kalpanik �� Bipasha Basu��s first Bengali film.
The common movie audience has no time, money and inclination to watch more than two films at the most, forget 7 films in a week.
So why the sudden rush? ��Do the producers have any choice? Not really��, says Taran. ��Because of the two month strike between producers and exhibitors in the month of April and May, there has been a big backlog of films to release. The biggies like Wanted and Dil Bole Hadippa are lined up from September 18. So for small films releasing this week, competing with other small films is a better option than competing with the big films where they will certainly loose.��
All we can say is may the best film win.

Upside: Brilliant performance by Shahid Kapoor, Vishal Bharadwaj��s dark and intense direction, interesting characterizations, good music, good cinematography
Downside: Too unconventional, stretched second half
Running Week: 2
Box-Office Verdict: Openedvery strongly but met with extreme opinions. People have either loved or hated the film. Working well at multiplexes and metros. Sliding down at single screens and small centers.

Upside: Some passable jokes
Downside: Outdated story, dull humour, silly climax, Genelia��s screechy performance, Prachi Desai gets into TV soap mode, unending length
Running Week: 2
Box-Office Verdict: Business is just the opposite of Kaminey. Working more at single screens and smaller centers. Dull at multiplexes and metros.

Upside: Lighthearted youthful feel, witty dialogues, brilliant music, catchy choreography, smart editing, good performances by Saif and Deepika
Downside: Not a new narrative �� same old story retold, unconvincing abrupt climax, d��j�� vu effect of DDLJ, Hum Tum, KANK
Running Week: 4
Box-Office Verdict: Hit

Trade Comments: ThoughShadow never showed any promise, its promotional campaign was so huge that one couldn��t escape knowing about this B-grader. That helped the film gain audience at select single screens.
