Filmmaker Rahul Bhole, who co-directed the acclaimed Gujarati film Reva, had also written a Hinglish play earlier this year (a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s
Macbeth
). Talking about the state of theatre in Gujarat, Bhole told us, “Not long ago, at a competition organized by the Gujarat government, I was surprised that there were no entries from Vadodara, while other cities from the state had multiple entries. When it comes to plays, a lot of people aren’t keen to buy tickets and they will go only if they get free passes. This mentality needs to change. Theatre needs better audience support.”
