After entertaining audiences in Mumbai and several places across the country, director
Ulka Mayur
’s three plays will be staged in Ahmedabad for the first time this week.
While
Tik Tak Tales
and
Go Go Gomuli
have carved a niche for themselves in being
remarkable plays for children
, I
,
Cloud
that was first staged in 2017 claims to be a futuristic comedy thriller. The latter also stars lyricist, screenwriter and filmmaker
Mayur Puri
and actress Dipna Patel. “We are bringing these plays t o Ahmedabad for the first time and I am excited to perform in my home state,” says Ulka who founded Story Circus, a platform that adapts stories for
theatre
, with hubby Mayur in 2009, an alumnus of the dramatics department of Gujarat College.
Elaborating about the plays, Ulka who is also a dancer and holds a PhD degree besides years of storytelling experience, says, “
Tik Tak Tales is a mix of music,
drama
and dance and tries to break what we call the fourth wall in theatre. It is an interactive experimental
play
based on lesser known folktales.”
Go Go Gomuli is a complete family entertainer too with a heart-touching story told in an experimental way.
The versatile artist who is also a mother of two and taught as a professor at a college in Mumbai says, “One day I and Mayur were just having a conversation and I realized how important social media and online storage spaces like Cloud have become. That’s where the play gets its title from.”
Ulka who is playing the role of Cloud in the play, says, “I hope Amdavadi audience will like the play. In fact, a lot of people have come up to me and said it reminded them of
Blackmirror though I have never seen any of its episode. I think it happens because both the creations talk about future and somewhere our imaginations might overlap.”
