From the time people enjoyed listening to music on a gramophone to having a list of songs on our smart phones, we have come a long way. But seldom do we ever think what it would have meant for the musicians who discovered that their voices and songs could be recorded. And this is what

Gauhar

explores. The play, that has been inspired by Vikram Sampath's My Name Is Gauhar Jaan is a story of one of India's first mass media superstar at the turn of the last century, one of the first Indian artists who made use of the recording technology to take her voice across the world.
The play also celebrates the spirit and feisty nature of the musicians of those times, the troubles they went through, the hardships they had to face and the dilemmas of the artiste within. Written by Mahesh Dattani and directed by Lillette Dubey, this play in English will be staged at Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Auditorium on July 1 from 6:30 pm onwards.
