Bhavai performances have a charm of their own. With a hig entertainment quotient, these performances also come with a social message and story which imparts some knowledge. The artists of Theatre Media Centre recently performed Juthan, a bhavai which was written by Asaita Thakar in the 14th century. Thakar was the family priest of the headman of Unjha - Hema Patel.
The daughter of Patel had been kidnapped by a Muslim subedar and Thakar went to rescue the girl as her father. The subedar, smelling something fishy, asked Thakar to have lunch with the girl. Thakar had to eat with the girl in order to save her, but Brahmins in those days never ate with people from a lower caste. After coming back home, he left the community and started writing plays to fend for himself.
Juthan is a prince who refuses to fight wars. He pretends that he is insane and leaves the city. Juthan's father makes a plan and sends Chataki - a beautiful maid to lure him back home.
