Sunny Jani, who dons many hats from being a writer to a director to a producer has come up with a musical short film Odd In The Even. The short film slatted to release on February 12, just days before Valentine’s Day is on love, hurt and heartbreak.

The musical has just one monologue at the end of the film that answers a lot of the viewer’s questions.
Ask Sunny what made him write a story like that and he says, “It is sadly inspired by an incident in my life. I was mute all through my relationship with a girl where I knew she was lying to me. I never got angry and kept listening to all the lies, while I knew the truth, but despite of all the efforts to try and hold on to that relationship I lost her. Because heroes don’t win in real life, and that is really what I call Odd In The Even!”
The music to this short film is given by Jainam Modi. Talking about the thought behind making it a musical film and he replies, “The core idea of the film from the start was that it will be a musical. We were lucky to find Jainam Modi, who understood our idea and gave beautiful music to make the film an even interesting one. And the base of the film is love and music, and love/music really has no language, it’s pure emotion which can be understood across the world, across all the languages, so I made my protagonist a mute character and my film a musical.”
There is always a reason behind naming a film a certain way. Sunny says, “Our protagonist Pratik being the only mute character in the film, throughout the film is shown constantly trying to save this dead relationship but somehow is unable to do so, yet his efforts never stop, and that’s the odd part of the film or life. He decides to hold on to the relationship and keep the fight going on, because though relationships are a gamble and there is always a 50 percent chance of it failing like in other things. Sometimes, to save a relationship, you have to give in more than you can odd in the even. Hence the name!”

Pratik Sharma

The short film shows Pratik Sharma and Tarjaane Bhadla in the lead. The film is produced by SevenDot Productions co-owned by Sunny Jani. Pratik Sharma who plays a mute protagonist in the musical short film says it took him two weeks to learn sign language. “It took around 2 weeks, where the first week was working on basics while the other week focused more on my dialogue and expression.”
Talking about the challenges of playing a mute lead Pratik says, “The sign language is a whole new language having its own rhythm, grammar and expression, so to express my heart out in some other language and that too, using just my hands and facial expressions was the major challenge. Sign language demands extreme level of expressiveness, which I lacked as Pratik; so this was also one of the challenges to incorporate their agility into my being.
This Valentines Day, fall in love with a story that is expressed without using words. Feel the right emotions.
