Pan Nalin’s style of working is very Hollywood like: Ronak Goswami

Ronak Goswami is a well-known name in the industry as a line and executive producer. He ventured into line production about six years ago and has worked on many films, documentaries and web-series. But with his recent outing, Pan Nalin’s Oscar nominated Chello Show, Ronak also tried his hand as acting. By his own admission, Ronak is more of a line producer than an actor, but he is looking forward to directing a film in the future.

In a chat, Ronak talks about working with Pan Nalin in Chello Show, his vision for himself and more.

‘Pan Nalin’s style of working is very Hollywood like’

Ronak, who was a line producer on Pan Nalin’s recent film Chello Show talks about working with him. “I have worked on many films, advertisements, documentaries with many different directors, but working with Nalin sir was a fortunate event in my career. When I first met the team, I did not know who Pan Nalin was. Then I googled who he was and tried to understand his way of filmmaking. As a line producer, it is my duty to understand a filmmaker’s vision so that we can choose the right locations. So, when I met him, I had an idea of his way of filmmaking.” Ronak explains that Nalin’s way of working is very Hollywood like. “His style of working is very different. He is very down to Earth and is a very peaceful person. One would not find him screaming on the sets. His style of working has a very Hollywood feel.”

‘I do see myself directing a film in the future’

Ronak had a prominent cameo in the film Chello Show, but he is not an actor at heart. His heart lies in something else. “I am not an actor; I am just a line producer. I have worked on more than 21 films, documentaries, web series and the likes. I had never aimed to become an actor, but when Nalin sir approached me for the role of a detective in Chello Show, I was scared at first. The role, though a cameo, is very important to the storyline. I told sir that acting was not my cup of tea. I could try and learn direction from him, but sir was adamant and told me that I just had to trust his vision and act as he asked me to. That’s exactly what I did.”

Ronak, who is interested more towards direction says, “I am more inclined towards direction. I am interested in camerawork too. I also have technical knowledge, as I have studied video journalism and so I know the process. Since, I work as a line producer, I do have the knowledge of other branches but not so much about acting. I want to help bigger production houses make films at more beneficial budgets.”

‘Feel privileged that Chello Show has been nominated for Oscars’

The line producer, who has worked on many films says he and his team tried to match up to Pan Nalin’s vision of the film. “It was really difficult to match up to his vision of the film as he has a long body of work and has travelled the world, but we did give about 20-25 options for each location he thought of shooting at. We would take shots of the lighting at the same place at various time of the day to show him the lighting and how it would look on the screen.”

“It is a huge achievement to have been able to work on a film like Chello Show. I feel privileged to have worked on a film that has been nominated in the Oscars. I aimed to learn more and become better at my work,” says Ronak.

As Ronak if just like most other actors he would want to shift to Mumbai, he says, “I wouldn’t want to move to Mumbai for acting, but I plan to make the move as a line and executive producer. In fact, currently I am in talks with some well-known production houses and if all goes according to the plan then I will make the move as soon as coming December.”
