Mehr celebrates Baisakhi today

Baisakhi marks the Punjabi

new year

(also the Sikh new year-the foundation day of the Khalsa Panth), and it’s also time to celebrate the harvest of rabi crops. On this day, after taking an early bath, people visit the gurdwaras and in Punjab, colourful fairs, which include fantastic folk dance performances, add more joy to the festivities. Mehr Mahajan, who has been living in Ahmedabad since the last 15 years, misses her hometown the most during Baisakhi. She shares, “I miss being with my grandparents and extended family in Amritsar. In Ahmedabad, we go to a club, where we dance and have lunch. I plan to do the same this year too.” Mehr, who has spent her childhood in Jalandhar and Ludhiana, misses eating pinni. “I also miss eating the authentic chhole kulcha, which was my favourite in Amritsar.”
