I will be happy if everyone actually thinks I am a bankable star: Malhar Thakar
Malhar Thakar was in Vadodara recently shooting for
Vickida No Varghodo
, which is co-directed by Rahul Bhole and Vinit Kanojia (they also co-directed the National Award winning Gujarati film
Reva
). In a quick chat with us on the sets of the film, Malhar spoke about his Bollywood dreams, the challenges faced by the Gujarati film industry and more. Excerpts from a chat:
You are considered to be one of the most bankable stars in Gujarati cinema today.
1x1 polls
Does that put pressure on you?
I will be happy if everyone actually considers me a bankable star (laughs)! But on a more serious note,
main bahut mehnat karta hoon
. I feel a sense of responsibility not just towards my producers and directors, but also the audience. Interestingly, back in 2010-11, I, Vinit and Rahul were roommates while staying in Mumbai. We had wanted to work together since then, and I am delighted that it has materialised now.
Talking of the Gujarati film industry, how can it reach the next level in your opinion?
I think Gujarati films need to explore new subjects now. Content is the most important thing. I’m keen on doing biopics and sports films. I believe in choosing a film from the audience’s point of view, and analyse whether I will want to pay money to watch the film at the theatres. I also think the industry needs to look at new ways of film promotions. Today, we are using methods which are repetitive like social media pe post
daal diya
,
aur
city
mein hoardings laga diye
. That’s not enough. For instance, if we are having a teaser/trailer launch, we need to make sure that there is great buzz surrounding it and everyone is talking about it.
A lot of Dhollywood stars are exploring Bollywood now. Do you have similar plans too?
Right now, I am busy completing the Gujarati films that I have signed. But I am in talks for Bollywood projects too, and there are definite plans to do Hindi films. It is likely to happen next year. However, even if I start doing Hindi films, Gujarati films will never take a backseat for me.
