Mayur Chauhan, popularly known as Michael, will soon complete a decade in the industry. The actor, who has played memorable characters in D-Town films like Karsandas Pay & Use, Saiyar Mori Re, Shu Thayu? and Chhello Divas, says that his approach towards work has changed over the years. Mayur shares, “Initially, my focus was on doing just great films. But I have realised that to make such a film, I should work on my character and see how I can contribute to its success.”

He adds, “There was a phase when I was getting roles similar to Chhello Divas, which I didn’t take up. I was fine with doing comedy but wanted to try something different. Now, I choose projects based on the script. Earlier, I would think about factors like the length of my role or whether I have done a certain character before. Now, I look at the story and whether it has a message for the audience.”

‘I have decided to explore different genres’
Be it playing a young boy in love who runs a public toilet (in Karsandas…) or a fierce gangster in Samandar, Mayur seems to love unconventional roles. He says, “I never imagined that Chhello Divas would be such a huge hit. We got immense love from fans, but I believe that it comes with a responsibility. So, I have decided to explore different genres as an actor, which will help me grow and entertain the audience.”

Mayur adds, “I feel the Gujarati industry has the potential to represent our culture and stories on a national and global level. I am trying to tap the full potential of Gujarati cinema.”

‘I want to try my hand at film production’
Mayur, who has also done Gujarati OTT shows like Cutting, wants to get into film production too. He says, “I love the process of filmmaking and while direction requires a different skill set altogether, I want to try my hand at production because I have learnt a lot from my films.”

Theatre trains an actor from scratch and helps them to prepare for the screen. Big industry names like Siddharth Randeria, Malhar Thakar and Pratik Gandhi started their journey with theatre. Ek alag hi approach hota hai, towards how they study the character and script. One can sense that yeh theatre ka banda hai

I feel there is an overdose of films being made and released in our industry right now. While people want to make Gujarati films, the required study and passion are lacking. It impacts our industry negatively. To make a good movie, makers need to do their homework and work towards the project with sincerity and passion
