Dipna Patel, who was a part of the hit Gujarati film
Gujjubhai The Great
(co-starring Siddharth Randeria and
Jimit Trivedi) in 2015, has just started shooting for another Gujarati movie. She tells us, “I am really excited about doing a Gujarati film after eight years. I never intended to take such a long break from Gujarati films, but things didn't work out. This project, which stars Ojas (Rawal) and me in lead roles, is directed by Chinmay Purohit and I am happy to be working with him.
I loved his film
Oxygen
(2018).”
She adds, “The film is based on the inspiring and extraordinary real-life story of a common man who went on to settle down in the US and did great work for his village. We have already shot some portions of the film in Gujarat and will be heading to Los Angeles for another schedule next month.” Excerpts from a chat with the Vadodara girl, who has been a part of the Hindi TV show
Shubharambh
(2019) and plays like
The Exchange Student, Mayday,
and
Raju Raja Ram Aur Main
(co-starring
Sharman Joshi):
‘I want to do more Gujarati films, but am not prepared to take up just about anything’
I would love to do more projects in my mother tongue (Gujarati).I have done a couple of Gujarati short films and was supposed to do a Gujarati web series too, but that didn’t work out due to the pandemic. While I want to do more Gujarati films, I am not prepared to take up just about anything. When I did my first Gujarati film, we were making either thrillers or comedies. But I am glad to see that we are trying out different genres now. I have relatives in Vadodara who say that they prefer watching Gujarati films over Bollywood options now, and that’s really encouraging. Our films are being noticed nationally as well and as an industry, we need to keep up the good work.
‘Thanks to OTT, there is enough work for everyone now’
Earlier, when an actor would come to Mumbai, she/he would be asked, “Bollywood
mein kab aa rahe ho
?” OTT has been a real game changer and now, there is enough work for everyone. Also, one gets to play really exciting characters on OTT and the medium gives you the time to work on a character. I will also keep doing theatre because it has helped me immensely in polishing my skills. Although I was not doing films or TV, I was regularly doing good plays and that kept me happy. We have had shows of
Raju Raja Ram Aur Main
abroad too and I got to travel a lot with this play. During the pandemic, things were very tough for theatre actors but now, I am glad that the scenario is much better. I also learnt a lot while doing my debut Hindi TV show
Shubharambh
and if I get a challenging role, I would love to do more shows.
