D-Town champions female characters with powerful narratives

21MU TIFFIN (2021)
This unconventional film, which tells the story of a woman running a tiffin service business, won critical acclaim, and was selected for a few prestigious international film festivals.

HELLARO (2019)
It created history by becoming the first Gujarati film to win the prestigious Best Feature Film Award at the 66th National Film Awards. Set in Kutch in 1975, it is a story of women who break free from years of oppression of a patriarchal society.

SHARATO LAGU (2018)
The film, an adaptation of the Marathi movie Chi Va Chi Sau Ka, is about a couple who are poles apart as personalities but are introduced as prospective marriage partners. Deeksha Joshi’s performance was appreciated by critics.

CARRY ON KESAR (2017)
The movie explores the journey of an elderly childless couple, and the challenges they face after deciding to have a baby pretty late in their lives. Supriya Pathak’s brilliant performance was one of the highlights of this film.

NAYIKA DEVI: THE WARRIOR QUEEN (2022)
Khushi Shah played a warrior queen (based on the life of Rani Naiki Devi) in this historical drama and while it was a multi-starrer, Khushi made her presence felt in the titular role.

KUTCH EXPRESS (2023)
The story revolves around Monghi (played by Manasi Parekh), a simple homemaker from Kutch, who believes that she has a perfect marriage, but it turns out to be an illusion. Monghi’s beautiful onscreen bond with her saas Baiji (played by Ratna Pathak Shah), the Sisoti gang (a group of women that meets secretly) and an unconventional ending are the highlights of this film.

ITTAA KITTAA (2024)
The movie is about a couple who, after trying to conceive for a long time, finally decides to adopt two girls and the makers handled this sensitive subject well. Manasi Parekh and Alpana Buch’s performances were praised by the critics.
