Acting is my happy space and I don't have a backup plan: Vyoma Nandi

Vyoma Nandi, who made a successful debut in Bollywood recently with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (she played Kiara Advani’s cousin sister in the film), has already made a mark in regional film industries including Gujarati and Telugu. Vyoma, who has done Gujarati films like Gujjubhai-Most Wanted, Oxygen, Luv Ni Love Storys and Cash On Delivery so far, is a qualified psychologist too and while her family stays in Canada, the passionate actor shifted to India a few years ago. In her own words, Vyoma “always wanted to be an actor and I never really had a backup plan in life.”

‘Kartik Aaryan is a very focused actor’
On working with Kartik Aaryan for her Bollywood debut, Vyoma says that she learnt a lot from him as a person. “I think I’ve learned to smile through the process from him. There were some hectic days on the set, but he handled it with ease. He was very focused and involved in every bit of what he was doing. I admire that about him,” she shares.

‘I always wanted to act and there was no plan B’
Vyoma always wanted to pursue acting. “I always wanted to act and never had a plan B. I always knew where I wanted to be. It just took me a while to realise that I will need to go and actively follow it, leaving the rest aside. I was never passionate about doing B.Sc in Psychology, but it was of more interest to me than the other courses,” says Vyoma.
She now wants to explore other regional industries like Malayalam, Tamil, and Marathi. She says, “I’ve always been fascinated by different cultures and languages. I consider myself fortunate to have worked in various languages. Even as a teenager, I used to search for songs from different languages and attempt singing them with the correct pronunciations. I am most comfortable acting in Hindi, but I want to explore more languages. I would love to do a Tamil, Malayalam or Marathi film as well.”

‘It’s amazing to see how various industries are coming together to produce great content’
Vyoma agrees that the regional vs Hindi divide in films is diminishing now and there are exciting collaborations when it comes to content creation. “Not just the Gujarati industry, many regional industries are coming together to deliver the best of content to the viewers. The language barriers are blurring and that is a great thing. There’s so much good work happening and if amazing actors and makers are coming together from different parts of India, there’s nothing better than that and I’m all for it,” she says.
While she hasn’t really explored the OTT space yet, she is open to exciting offers and tells us, “As of now, I’m happy doing just films. However, OTT is exploring some really intriguing topics and scripts and if something challenging comes my way, I would go for it. It has to be something that I would love watching as an audience.”

‘I learnt classical music from my dad and love singing’
Vyoma’s father Pramesh Nandi is a professional singer. Asked about whether she ever wanted to pursue singing as a career, the actor says, “I learnt classical music from him for about five or six years. I love singing because I guess it’s in my blood. However, I was never passionate enough to become a professional singer. I think acting is my happy place.”
