When art meets jazz: Kolkata celebrates Louiz Banks’s legacy with a nostalgic, musical evening

Named Art Meets Jazz, the Saturday evening concert at a heritage city pub saw Louiz Banks’s deft touch on the keyboards with Kolkata’s original Didi, Usha Uthup, in a song that summed up the wave of emotions in the room: (Where Do I Begin) Love Story. Glimpses.

Music and art come together
Hosted by the Bengal Biennale, the evening showcased the Grammy-nominated composer-keyboardist’s art, based on 35 of his original tunes. Curated by a Mumbai-based research platform and auction hosts, the artworks have been converted into layers digitally. “We have used state-of the-art tech to convert his large works into compositions, like his music, following movements,” said spokesperson Indrajit Chatterjee.

Quotes

My second album was done with you, right here Louiz. I remember we recorded the whole album for `3,000. It gave me one of my biggest hits Love Story– Usha Uthup on her memories with LouizMy father (Louiz Banks) has always painted. This idea of showcasing his art in a multimedia format, which also brings in his music, was intriguing. It has a jazz flavour to it, with contemporary and fusion elements – Gino Banks
