I spent six months in Zaporozhye City, Ukraine (the-then USSR) in 1979 taking specialized engineering training. I was the leader of a group of 12 engineers from SAIL/ Bokaro Steel Plant. There one evening I chanced upon the ghazal  album 'Unforgettable' of legendary Jagjit Singh in a music shop. Imagine getting it in Ukraine! I had already purchased a record player. After this my routine changed. Coming back from Plant I would listen and listen the album over numerous cups of tea.     One evening when I was engrossed in my newly acquired hobby,I sensed that some one is standing outside my hotel room. I opened the the door and was surprised to see a Russian standing there leaning on the wall. He was in his forties. Embarrassed, he apologized for listening to the music coming from my room. I invited him to come in. First thing he asked me 'achyom eta pecnie?' meaning 'What is this song about?' He asked me without understanding a single word. l He was asking about ' Baat niklegi to phir dour talak jayegi..'  Though I know Russian language, I was in trouble. How to translate its spirit? How to translate 'choodiyon par bhi kayee tanz kiye jayenge...' for him ? I explained to him for 2 hours our culture and concept of 'ishque' and  was reasonably successful in making him understand both word by word meaning and the  background of the nazm. Next day evening,I went to the same shop with him to buy the record for him. I gift it to him .. He insisted to pay..I told him to consider it a gift from India. He was so happy. That day and this day,  I am always with Jagjit Singh... both when I am sad or happy or simply to unwind.
