It was a day for the youngsters and their need for speed. 22-year-old Sailesh Bolisetti, from Vishakhapatnam, won the inaugural race of Polo Cup India 2010 on the street track in the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune. He was followed home closely by Saran Vikram from Chennai and Karthik Shankar from Delhi.
A delighted Sailesh said, “This is a great day for me and I would like to thank Volkswagen for giving me this amazing opportunity.
I made a good start and after that just had to make sure that I did not make any mistakes.” The only woman driver on the grid, Alisha Abdullah, finished in an impressive 14th place in her debut race.
Jochem Heizmann, member of the board of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for group production, said, “We are proud and honoured that for the first time in the history of Indian motor sports, an international automaker has launched a racing series that encourages young talent of this kind. Through this step we look forward to bringing our technical knowledge and expertise to India.”
Over 1,100 motor sports enthusiasts from across the country had registered to compete in the race and the final 20 drivers will compete in a series of six races held between May to December 2010. The winners will get an opportunity to travel to other countries and foreign championships to further develop their racing career.
