Reflective of this attitude was the two-day event by the American Embassy to strengthen Indo-American friendship. The inaugural function on day one began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Larry Schwartz, Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs, US Embassy.
Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer Enne Seshadri who was in the city for the first time confessed that she “enjoyed the kababs and the city’s amazing culture and history. The party warmed up when artists of Rhythm Road Jazz - All Stars took the guests by surprise by starting their performance with the rendition of Hare Krishna Govind Gopala and created an impromtu number on Lucknow and called it Lullaby of Lucknow! The band members Charlie Porter, Eli Yamin, Alvin Atkinson and Ari Roland gathered all the applause and praises with a medley of Hindi and English songs thereafter and soon had the whole crowd swaying to their beats. Katie Williams and Sally Schippert, American students who’re currently pursuing their medical courses at KGMU were floored too.
The next day saw a get-together organised by Dr Ammar Rizvi, President of All India Minorities Forum for Democracy. The function which was organised in the honour of the US Ambassador to India David C Mulford, was held but without His Excellency. But he was represented by Tedd Osaus, the Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs. Both days ended with lavish dinners at leading hotels and saw the city’s who’s who interacting with the videshis. Spotted at the respective dinners were Prof Devi Singh, Director IIM, Lucknow, Mohinder Singh, Principal Secretary Housing among others.
