doweshowbellyad=0; Setting the mood (TOI Photo)Saturday night was a melting pot of tremendous talent, electrifying energy and superlative songs, as budding rock singers of the city took part in the Young India Intercollegiate Band Contest. Seven bands -- Arson, LPG, Chaos, Zero Miles, High Saint Jane, KDK and Glasnost -- took to the stage to enthrall the audience.
The bands ensured that the rush of adrenaline that they experienced while performing, rubbed off on the enthusiastic crowds as well.
As they mixed hard rock with patriotism, English with Hindi and original songs with popular versions, the adroitness and style with which they went about their task had the Radio Mirchi team (who were the judges for the evening) nod in appreciation. Swanand Kirkire, the special guest for the show, said that though he had never played rock in his life, he was enjoying the raw energy of the show. He even sang the title song of the movie Khoya Khoya Chand and it helped the audience get into the mood for music. The chief guest of the show, Commissioner of Police Dr Satyapal Singh, took time from his busy schedule to be part of this rocking gig.As each band tried to make an instant connect with the audience, which mostly comprised students, it was their live wire act that had crowds banging their heads, leaning over barricades and swinging to the tunes. If Toxicity saw the singers get into the groove, then Maa Tujhe Salaamand Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai had the audience singing and humming along. By the time the last band performed, energy levels were high and there was loud guessing game going on about the probable winners. RJ Denny, one of the judges, said, It is great to see that the live band scene in Nagpur is picking up. Also seeing such young talent is amazing and things can only get better! Though it was tough to choose a winner, Arson from VNIT and Chaos from SRKNEC were declared the winners and runners up respectively. Neeraj from Arson said that the feeling of being winners was simply euphoric and that it had to still sink in. "Our band is feeling elated, and performing here was a great experience," said Ankit from Chaos.
