Tune in for healing through sounds and vibrations
Mumbaikars looking for a relaxing experience that helps improve both physical and mental health are now signing up for sound bath. Sound bath is a meditative experience which involves using the frequencies of various instruments, such as Himalayan bowls, gongs, sonic circles and the sound of waves.
‘Himalayan sound bowls are most popular’Healing with Himalayan sound bowls is considered as the most popular form of sound therapy, says Rima Rohra a certified sound bath facilitator from Mumbai. In the session, large Himalayan singing bowls are placed around the body in a specific arrangement. When these bowls are played, they help the person enter a relaxed state, with deep breathing and brainwave patterns known as the theta state.
She says, “Every sound bowl is attuned to a particular frequency. The frequency of the heart chakra is 639 Hz. This frequency is used in meditation and healing music to help balance emotions and promote love and understanding.”
‘Issues which can’t be logically understood can be worked with sounds’It is believed that sound creates a certain space where people receive different answers to issues they face. Swapnil Gawde, founder of a sound therapy studio explains, “The human body is 75% water, and sounds travel faster through water. Deep issues which can’t be logically understood can be worked upon with these sounds and frequencies.”
As the sound vibrations washed over me, I felt an immediate sense of relaxation, like my body was tuning itself to a calmer frequency. By the end of the session, I felt lighter - almost as if a weight had been lifted

Tips to prep for a sound bathSound bath sessions are usually 45 minutes to an hour long. Harii Udhavdas Rajai, who specialises in sound healing advises, “Usually participants lie down on the floor during the session, so ensure you are okay with that. If you have metal implants in the body, let the healer know before the session. Wear comfortable clothing so it’s easier for the sound to travel. Eat an hour before the session.”
