Top Indian athletes gather in city to wish the 2018 Commonwealth Games contingent

The Mumbai Press Club had an air of fervour and fun on Thursday afternoon as top Indian athletes – shooter Anjali Bhagwat, shuttler Aparna Popat and ace hockey Olympian Viren Rasquinha - sent their best wishes to the 2018 Commonwealth Games contingent via the #RangDeTiranga initiative. The event was held by a channel in collaboration with the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM).

The athletes along with sports journalists and other channel representatives, created the ‘Tiranga’ with their palm print. Former World Number 1 Anjali Bhagwat was the first one to put her handprints on the canvas. Following her, Aparna Popat, the nine-time National Badminton Champion and Viren Rasquinha, Former Captain, Indian hockey team, did the honours.

Anjali Bhagwat, who is a multiple Gold medallist at Commonwealth Games, said, “The mindset and morale of our athletes is upbeat considering their high-level achievements so far. I am very confident about the success of our Indian team in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.” Aparna Popat added, “It’s a huge responsibility and at the same time a feeling of immense pride to represent the Tiranga at an international multi-sports event like the Commonwealth Games. I would like to wish the entire Indian contingent the very best and hope they emerge victorious. I am thrilled to be a part of the well-wishing ceremony.” And Viren Rasquinha, former Captain of India's National hockey team summed up, “The recent performance of the Indian men's and women's hockey teams have been very promising. The Commonwealth Games is a great platform for the teams to take their performance to the next level. Focus, self-belief, team-work and great team spirit are critical to bring laurels to the country. This is a great initiative and it will surely encourage the entire Indian contingent travelling to Gold Coast.”
