A consortium of music practitioners, patrons and aficionados, came together on Thursday evening in order to promote Indian classical music. The agenda was to announce an initiative that would make it reach out to masses in every nook and cranny of India.
Speaking on the occasion, Durga Jasraj, the creative brain behind this venture (along with Vikram Shankar) said, The initiative is an effort to popularise all kinds of Indian music; be it folk, sufi, qawwali, bhajans and many more.
And were fortunate to have maestros, such as Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt Ajay Pohankar, Jagjit Singh, Hariharan, and Anuradha Paudwal lending support to the cause through their participation in the same.
Devisingh Shekhawat was the guest of honour at this musical do. Shekhawat spoke at length about the need for promotion of our heritage arts and lauded the organisers of this concert. He also agreed with Pt Jasrajs suggestion that along with the prestigious awards conferred upon veteran artists, the government should also think of extending some cash reward to support those artists who can no longer perform and might be in need of funds in the old age.
The occasion was also graced by Rajshree Birla who said, I have always taken pride in Indias musical tradition and supported it in any small way I can. The programme was attended by a number of stalwarts and musical talents, including Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia (who later gave a marvellous flute recital along with Rattan Mohan Sharma who gave a vocal recital); Pt Ajay Pohankar, Hariharan, Richa Sharma, L Subramaniam, Niladri Kumar, Mohammed Vakil, Satyajit Talwalkar, Sridhar Parthasarthi and others.
