The event started with a lot of fanfare, as was expected, as John introduced Rossi to everyone. But during all this, there was a simmering discontent among the media because it had been let out that Rossi was running on a tightly-drawn schedule and would not be able to have one-on-one interactions with any one. So, when the emcee for the evening, Shefali Talwar, called for the electronic channels to move forward and address their questions to John and Rossi, mayhem ensued as every cameraman tried to get get past the bouncers and get close to Rossi and John.
Suddenly, one scribe got into a tiff with the bouncer, others followed, and everyone began to shout even as John and Shefali tried to calm people down.
All this, of course, is the normal course of events in star-starved Delhi. But John was genuinely upset by this ruckus. He looked at Rossi in embarrassment and said, “Welcome! Welcome to India!” While the argument was going on everyone was getting worked up, Rossi kept up an uneasy smile on his face, looking questioningly at John. The actor – all due credit to him – looked at Rossi and said, “Don’t worry! I am here! It’s alright!” After a while, the actor and the biker were ushered backstage.
When things cooled down a bit, John came back to the stage, visibly livid and said, “I am sorry, but Vale is not going to come back now. After what happened, he was shocked and has gone back to his room. Anyway, all of us have been shamed in front of a very important guest and I don’t think after such an incident, he’ll ever contemplate coming back to Delhi.” Rossi not coming back left the fans crestfallen, and one of the fans found a mike and told everybody present how he had been collecting money to be able to travel abroad and watch one MotoGP!
