College students get together to create a greener Mumbai
A suburban college’s NSS unit assisted the forest department for the ‘13 crore Van Mahotsav’, recently. There were 27 NSS student volunteers of a suburban college along with two faculty members Rakesh Panse and Pradeep Saymote took steps towards increasing the forest cover of the country.
It was an event that not just helped the environment but was also special for student volunteers.
They returned with a sense of fulfillment for having contributed towards making the environment better for a ‘clean and green’ future.
The student volunteers planted about 350 saplings out of a total of 5,000 planted during the day. The saplings were provided by the forest authorities - forest guard Dhananjay Patil and Durga Ghute. The programme ended with the volunteers singing the NSS song, ‘Hum Honge Kamyaab’.
The faculty members of NSS unit of Mithibai College and the student volunteers had much to take away from this go green initiative.
The entire village of nature lovers who helped the forest officers with little or no expectation is an example for the entire nation.
The initiative was part of the ‘13 crore Tree Plantation - Van Mahotsav’ that was organised by the Forest Department of the Government of India. This is an implementation of the original plan formulated by the Forest department on July 1, 2017, of planting four crores of trees, which was executed on the same day.
The symbolic inauguration of this initiative was done by the Principal Dr Rajpal Shripat Hande by planting a sapling in the campus of Mithibai College. The week-long Van Mahotsav consisted of a total plantation of 13 crore trees and it was inaugurated by Round Forest officer PM Mhaskare and Range Forest Officer RR Sanke. The members of the local govt bodies and villagers had initiated the movement.
The forest department strives hard to maintain the forest.
