When Australian director Baz Luhrmann decided to come to India with his artist friend Vincent Fantauzzo, little did he know that he’d have three falls from a motorbike, a broken finger and scores of fans by the time he goes back.
But, what started as a creative adventure also turned out to be a pleasurable trip. Baz and Vincent zipped through Rajasthan on motorbikes, taking pictures along the way.

And the work resulted in an exhibition, which they recently put up in the city, proceeds from which will go to the charity, Deeds. Talking about Deeds, which works for the hearing impaired, Baz got every light in the hall switched off and asked the guests to maintain pin drop silence to understand the predicament of these people.
WORKING WITH RAHMAN: Portions of Baz and Vincent’s stay in Mumbai and pictures from their bike trip were converted to a movie by Kaizad Gustad with complimentary music by AR Rahman. When the short film was played for the gathering, Baz said, “AR’s a genius. I am so thankful to him for creating this for us.” While Baz spoke about his trip, we saw Sharmila Tagore quietly leave.
READY-TO-SERVE WIT: Vincent, who seemed like a recluse at first, was in fact full of anecdotes about the trip and about Baz’s ‘unfortunate’ falls. He had the audience in splits for the longest time and as soon as the do ended, both were seen obliging queues of excited fans with autographs.
