Mira Nair’s heartfelt message for her son wins the internet
Filmmaker Mira Nair took to social media to share a touching note about her son, New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, and it’s winning hearts online. In her message — posted as part of the Moms for Mamdani community event — the Monsoon Wedding director called herself a “filmmaker, neighbor, and proud OG mom of Zoran,” going on to describe her son as “principled, fearless, and guided by a deep belief in dignity for all.”
“I’ve seen him grow, lead, and listen,” Nair said in her message. “And not that I’m biased — but his is the kind of leadership that gives me hope.” She praised the group’s mutual aid drive for Bushwick Ayuda Mutua, which collected diapers and menstrual pads, calling it “a beautiful act of solidarity” and urging mothers to “vote with your hearts and minds.”
The video quickly went viral, with netizens flooding the comments to celebrate Nair’s words and her son’s growing influence in New York politics. “A good mama makes a great son,” wrote one user, while another added, “You produced and raised a gentleman, a genius and a great human being.” Many fans also shared their admiration for her as both a filmmaker and a mother — one comment read, “You may have made wonderful films, Ms Nair, but your greatest masterpiece is Zohran.”
Adding to the nostalgia, several old photographs of Mira Nair and a young Zohran have resurfaced online, shared by a popular film history account. The images — showing the filmmaker with her son during his childhood — have only amplified the outpouring of love, with fans drawing parallels between the warmth of Nair’s cinema and the values she has instilled in her son.
As one comment aptly summed up: “From Monsoon Wedding to the Mayor’s race — this is what legacy looks like.”
