A Russian play staged in the city

Written by an eminent Russian playwright Anotn Pavlovich Chekhov and directed by an Australian theatre director and educationist, Aubrey Mellor Moore, the play titled Teen Behne was staged at the Thrust auditorium of Bhartendu Academy. While welcoming the director and introducing him to the audience, Dinesh Khanna, director of BNA also shared how grateful he is to have Aubrey Mellor in the city and for giving Lucknowites a chance to witness his exemplary direction.

Translated in Hindi by Sabira Habib, the play was enacted by the budding performers of the academy and revolved around Olga, Masha, and Irina, the three sisters of Prozorov family who have been leading a purposeless life following the death of their father and always long to settle in Moscow where the sisters had spent their childhood. The fact that their brother married Natasha, an arrogant peasant girl, added to their feeling of despair. She gradually encroaches on the family home, destroying even the sisters’ little haven. Despite their failures, they decide to look for a purpose and some hope which also gives a lesson to the audience to keep trying to find their purpose in life.
Since the play was an adaptation of a Russian play, the performers were seen wearing the traditional costumes of the country designed by a well-known Indian Theatre Artist and Costume Designer, Amba Sanyal.
