Lagnajita Chakraborty faces on-stage harassment during live show in Bhagwanpur
Singer Lagnajita Chakraborty was allegedly harassed and nearly assaulted during a live performance on Saturday at a private school in Bhagwanpur, East Midnapore, after she sang a devotional song on stage. According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Mehboob Mallik, who allegedly objected to the choice of song and demanded that the singer perform a secular number instead. What began as verbal heckling soon escalated into a serious security breach when the man reportedly climbed onto the stage and aggressively confronted the singer mid-performance.
Recounting the incident, Lagnajita said she had started her show around 7 pm and everything was proceeding smoothly. “By around 7.45 pm, I had just finished my seventh song, Jago Maa, and was interacting with the audience. I was about to begin my eighth song when a man suddenly came running towards the stage. Within seconds, he was on stage with the intention of hitting me,” she said. She added that the entire concert was being video-recorded by the school. “The footage will clearly show what happened. He came very close to me before two or three people intervened and pulled him away. While being restrained, he shouted, ‘Onek Jago Maa hoyeche, ebar ektu secular gaa,’” the singer recalled. Following the incident, Lagnajita said she immediately walked off the stage and went to the police station, where she filed a general diary. Lagnajita’s manager Anshuk Mitra said the situation turned threatening without any provocation. “One of the owners came up on stage. He stood right in front of her with an aggressive approach, as if he was about to slap her. In her 11-year-long career, this has never happened before. All of us were terrified,” he added. A complaint has been lodged at the Bhagwanpur police station, and police sources confirmed that the accused has been arrested.
