The erstwhile cultural capital of India — Kolkata — is always eager to host budding talents and their work. Keeping the need for such encouragement in mind, Prarambha — the maiden

by Ullaas — a group led by contemporary artists of Kolkata, features paintings and photographs by senior as well as emerging artists from Bengal. The show, organised by Banglish, saw renowned painter

present at the inauguration ceremony. “I really liked the work of the artists. They showcased some serious work and each one maintained an individual style. There were some 10-12 artists work on display and keeping a considerable gap between paintings was relief to the eyes,” said Wasim, adding, “Each one — Sudip Karmakar, Suman Choudhury, Ipsit Roy and Raj Chowdhury — showed mature work. Their brilliant water colour, portrait with a difference and experimental work were amzing to look at.”

as a means of jubilation. It occurred to Sudip and Raj that such a group can be formed. They thought of calling all like-minded artists to be a part of the group and promote alternate art forms and encourage emerging and budding artists to come forward with their work. “Painting is my elixir of life. , I feel incomplete and jaded. Not just a vision, but painting is an accessory that embellishes my existence,” said Ipsit Roy, writer and artist, who is also a member of Ullaas, adding, “Through this show, we have made it possible for young artists to come forward with their work, giving them a chance to showcase what they are capable of. This is important for all those who are planning to take up painting as a full time career. Artists might be good but they seldom get the right platform. Our group will like to make a difference.”
Along with Sudip, Raj and Ipsit, Joydeep Kundu has also been supportive of the endeavour.
