Sangeet Sammelan, one of the most celebrated events of classical music, took place at Sangeet Research Academy recently. Maestros of Hindustani classical music came together for the three-day event. Before starting his concert, santoor
maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma took a dig at the cacophony outside the Academy premise. “There is more music outside than inside... As if it is a full-blown
orchestra
... When I came here for the first time many years ago, it was so empty. Not many people used to stay in this area,” he said.
The conference featured several maestros including Ustad Rashid Khan, Pt Ulhas Kashalkar and so on. While the first and the last days culminated early, the second-day was an all-night concert that was lapped up by the audience. On the third day, the concert started with singer Vidushi Subhra Guha. Amidst a number of ragas and thumris she rendered, raga Basant Bahar was lauded the most. “I had to perform in a limited time but it feels great to be able to come here,” she added. After her, Pt Partha Chatterjee took to the stage and presented a stunning sitar performance. The event concluded with the performance of Pt Ajoy Chakrabarty.
