Sector V to get public toilets with commercial block

KOLKATA: Sector V is set to get more pay-and-use toilets, and the new facilities will have retail or commercial blocks on the premises.

NDITA plans to engage an architecture consultant to prepare the design for the toilet-cum-micro-retail or commercial blocks, the first of which will come up at the crossing of Street No. 25 and Street No. 30. The architecture architecture will also be assigned to design the railings along the adjacent stretches and also landscape the Pedestrian Plaza in Sector V. "Unlike most of the other pay-and-use toilets in the city, we want to set up a complex, where we will have a commercial space, along with toilet blocks," said an NDITA official.

Those working in the IT hub welcomed the idea, pointing out Sector V did not have public toilets, which inconvenienced commuters and regulars there. "There is no public toilet in the area. As a result, those travelling from outside and those working on the roads face a lot of inconvenience," said an IT official.

NDITA officials pointed out many students and others, who visited government or other institutes, often searched for toilets as well as facilities, like photocopy and printing shops. "We are looking at a public amenity centre, which will have toilets, along with shops, like those for photocopying and printing," said an official.

NDITA officials said work was also on to complete the iconic gate. The authorities plan to develop the stretch from the Wipro crossing to College More into a smart street, with cycle lanes, smart bus stand, water ATMs, public art, CCTV cameras, better illumination and signage.
