Night devoted to Bengali folk music
Literally so. The band set off on a journey 11 years back and since then, no signal has been able to bring Bhoomi to a halt.
And it has, with its truckload of soulful music, driven straight into the hearts of zillions of Bengalis, not just in India, but the world over.
On Saturday, when the band paused for a while to celebrate its 11th anniversary, music lovers took the opportunity to pay respect to this great ‘driving force’ in their lives by turning up in plenty at a city auditorium.

Nostalgia was running high and Surojit said: “We had dreamt of taking the essence of Bengali folk music all over the country and almost all over the world.
And now that we have been successful, it feels good. But it wouldn’t have been possible without the love, affection, appreciation and blessings of the millions of listeners.” While Bhoomi gave the listeners a taste of its original sound (minus the drums), the band members also shared the stage with Sraboni Sen. “We sang Boro asha kore and Purano shei diner katha together,” informed Soumitra.
The band was also excited about the presence of veteran singer Sumitra Sen. “When Sraboni messaged at midnight the day before the show saying, ‘my mom wants to come’, we were thrilled! It couldn’t have been any better,” Soumitra added. The band, apart from belting out their popular songs, also felicitated theatre personality Renu Roy, who provided the band its first platform. It was an evening to remember. With Bhoomi in the driver’s seat, that was only obvious.
