It was a gala musical night at The Big Ben, New Kenilworth Hotel, on a recent Friday. Pumping up the volume was alternative hip hop act Underground Authority.
As it performed its mix of rhythmic funk and poetic protest, the crowd was thrilled to the core. The only cover that the band did was Urvashi, with the vocalist improvising on the number. “Thank you so much for your support,” said vocalist Animesh after a high voltage performance.
Next it was alternative post-grunge sensation Gravy Theory’s turn to take to the stage with its high-energy set. And quite a gravy the band stirred up for the audience to relish. Adding variety to the night further was Kolkata-based emcee duo Ayemenn who debuted with their freestyle rap/hip hop sound. On being asked about the strange name, Ayemenn, the duo (Animesh and Srinivas) said it was derived from the prayer ending, Amen.
